Commercial Insurance

Commercial insurance is required whenever your vehicle is used to generate income (car rentals, ride-sharing, or car-sharing). Personal insurance policies typically exclude coverage when the vehicle is rented out.

CarShareNova offers tech-enabled, on-demand commercial insurance specifically designed for car-sharing, brokered by SilverCrest Insurance Brokers and underwritten by Old Mutual Insure.

How It Works

  • Insurance activates per rental day (from handover to return).
  • A fixed daily insurance fee is deducted from your payout.
  • The renter pays a refundable deposit, held securely by CarShareNova.
  • If no incident occurs, the full deposit is returned to the renter.
  • If an incident occurs, the excess and any additional costs are recovered from the renter starting with the holding deposit.

During the rental you receive:

Note: If you already have commercial insurance (e.g. as a rental company or shuttle service), you can opt out of CarShareNova’s daily insurance and use your own cover. You may also request a quote for our competitive monthly insurance product.

CarShareNova Share

CarShareNova retains 20% of the trip price to cover platform operations, support, marketing, and advertising.

You keep 80% of the trip price, minus the daily insurance fee (if you opted into CarShareNova’s insurance).

Vehicle Standards & Eligibility

To maintain quality and safety across the platform, all vehicles must meet the following standards:

  • Be roadworthy with a valid licence disc
  • Be maintained according to manufacturer service standards
  • Have no major body damage or active safety warnings
  • Be less than 15 years old and valued above R200,000
  • Have fewer than 200,000 km on the odometer
  • Be in excellent mechanical condition with a working odometer and all seat belts in safe working order
  • Have a clean title (no salvage or previous Code 3 history)

Branding Restrictions

The vehicle must be free of any external or internal business, sponsor, or third-party branding. Only standard automaker branding or approved CarShareNova stickers are permitted.

Classic & Specialty Vehicles

Rare, classic, or unique cars may be listed if in excellent condition, subject to individual review and approval.

Listing Requirements

You must upload at least 10 clear, high-resolution photos showing:

  • Front, Rear, Left Side, Right Side
  • Interior, Dashboard, Odometer, Wheels

Photography Tips

  • Wash the vehicle thoroughly
  • Take photos in daylight
  • Avoid filters or heavy editing
  • Highlight premium features

Rental Policies & Expectations

Mileage Limits

  • You may set your own daily mileage limit and charge excess fees.
  • Recommended: 200 km per day (supercars may have lower limits).
  • Monthly bookings automatically receive half the daily allowance per day.

Fuel Policy

  • Vehicle should be returned with the same fuel level as handover.
  • We recommend full tank at both start and return.
  • Missing fuel will be charged to the renter and added to your payout.

Vehicle Presentation

  • Hand over the vehicle clean, vacuumed, and odour-free.
  • Additional cleaning fees may be charged for excessive soiling.

Host Cancellations

You may cancel a booking due to:

  • Vehicle unavailability
  • Mechanical issues
  • Safety concerns

Repeated cancellations may reduce your listing visibility and host rating.

Tracking & Roadside Assistance

  • All vehicles must have an approved tracking system (high-risk vehicles may require multiple systems).
  • You are encouraged to set speeding alerts, reckless driving notifications, and geofences.
  • The rental contract allows early termination if unsafe or unauthorised use is detected.

Roadside Assistance is included during active rentals for:

  • Flat batteries, flat tyres, lockouts, breakdowns, and towing (where applicable).

Renter Vetting & Trust

Every renter must pass CarShareNova’s rigorous verification process before they can book your vehicle.

We verify:

  • Identity and driver eligibility
  • Live in-app selfie matching
  • Financial and banking checks
  • Biometric identity verification
  • Credit screening
  • Driver licence checks

Requirements in South Africa

  • CarShareNova allows drivers 25 years and older with a valid driver’s licence held for at least 3 years.
  • Drivers aged 21–24 may rent only with your explicit approval and will pay a Young Driver Surcharge for additional insurance cover.

Bookings, Commission & Payouts

  • You receive a booking request with full trip details and the renter’s profile.
  • You have 24 hours to accept or decline (requests expire automatically).
  • Once accepted, CarShareNova collects payment and the deposit from the renter.

Payouts

  • Processed within 72 hours of trip start
  • Reflected in your account within 3–7 working days

Fees

  • Platform commission: 20% (deducted automatically)
  • Insurance fee: deducted only if you use CarShareNova’s cover
  • Mileage and fuel adjustments settled at trip end

The CarShareNova Handover Process

Our guided in-app process ensures everything is properly documented and insured.

On pickup day:

  • You and the renter meet at the agreed location.
  • Scan vehicle licence disc (in the renter’s presence)
  • Scan renter’s driver’s licence
  • Take a photo of the renter for identity confirmation
  • Complete full vehicle condition check (photos of all sides + notes)
  • Record starting mileage and fuel level
  • Both parties digitally sign the contract
  • Keys are handed over only after the contract is signed

Claims Process in Case of an Incident

  • The renter must immediately report any incident via the app with supporting photos.
  • SilverCrest Insurance Brokers will assist throughout the claims process.
  • Evidence is collected.
  • SilverCrest Insurance Brokers reviews documentation.
  • The insurer assesses the claim.
  • Repairs are authorised.
  • Excess (if applicable) is recovered from the renter’s deposit or directly from the renter.

If damage is discovered at drop-off or after return, you must report it within 24 hours.
